Register PGH
Since 2012, Physician Global Health (PGH) has been a recognised profile. Since 2015, there has been a register for PGH at the Registration Committee of Medical Specialists (RGS). To work as an PGH in the Netherlands, you must register in this register after completing your training. Registration takes place for a maximum period of five years.
You must also be registered in the BIG register to work as a doctor in the Netherlands. Unlike registered specialists, profile doctors are not automatically linked to the BIG register, but the (re-)registration in the profile register can serve as a basis for re-registration in the BIG register.
For more information on the RGS, see https://www.knmg.nl/ik-ben-arts/rgs/rgs.
For more information on registration in the BIG register, see BIG re-registration.
Re-registration
When the registration period ends, the PGH can re-register in the profile register. To do so, the PGH must comply with rules and requirements set by the College Geneeskundige Specialismen (CGS). In this regard, see also the Kaderbesluit herregistratie specialisten and the decisions relating to International Healthcare.
Re-registration requirements Physician Global Health
In summary, there are four requirements you must meet to re-register as an PGH in the RGS register (see also https://www.knmg.nl/ik-ben-arts/herregistratie/herregistratieeisen-1):
- The work experience requirement, demonstrating that you have been sufficiently employed within PGH's professional field
- Competence enhancement requirement, demonstrating that you have attended sufficient continuing education or training to keep your knowledge and skills up to date
- Participation in External Quality Visitation in the form of an Peer Review Group (ICT)
- Participation in an Evaluation of Individual Performance (EIF), where you reflect on your own skills and development based on feedback from colleagues
Work experience requirement
On average over a five-year period, the PGH has worked at least an average of 16 hours per week in its own field,
Or: Over a five-year period, the PGH has worked at least an average of 8 hours per week in its own field AND has performed at least an average of 8 hours per week of equivalent work as referred to in Article D.18 of the CGS Framework Decision,
Or: Over a five-year period, the PGH has worked at least an average of eight hours per week in his/her own field AND at least an average of eight hours per week in general patient care in a hospital department of obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, emergency medicine, surgery or in a general practice.
Expertise requirement
The PGH participates in at least 40 hours per year (total 200 hours in 5 years) of accredited professional development in the form of continuing education and training and can demonstrate this with supporting documents. A maximum of 50% of continuing education may take place in another speciality. PGH working abroad can take training locally or online. In addition, certain activities also yield accreditation points (e.g. authorship of a scientific article, holding a lecture, participation in a guidelines committee), whereby 1 point equals 1 hour of training.
Activities and accreditations can be easily tracked in the personal GAIA file (see below). When participating in an NSGH-accredited activity, the points are automatically credited in the participants' GAIA files by the provider of the activity. For other activities, the AIG itself should apply for accreditation in the GAIA file.
In the Note on in-service training & re-registration PGH describes the rules regarding accreditation of expertise promotion, including which activities are accredited and how the AIG can apply for accreditation for them. Applications are assessed by the Commission on Accreditation of the NSGH (accreditatie@nsgh.nl).

External Quality Assurance through Peer Review Groups
The PGH participates in External Quality Visitation in the form of an Intercollegiate Review Group (ICT) led by an Approved Quality Consultant (EKC) for at least 10 hours in 5 years. These hours count towards the expertise promotion requirement of 200 hours.
To join a peer review group and/or as an (aspiring) EKCér, mail to: herregistratie@nsgh.nl
More information on external quality assessment and the peer review groups can be found in the document Information on External quality assessment and peer review groups.
Individual Performance Evaluation (EIF)
The PGH participates in evaluation of individual functioning (EIF) at least once every five years. This is also compulsory for an AIG working abroad. If you foresee any obstacles to this, do not hesitate to contact one of the EIF discussion leaders (contact details are on the private members' area of the website) to see how things can be resolved. Start the process for the EIF in time (at least 6 months before you want to re-register).
More information on the EIF and the steps to follow can be found in the document Information on Individual Performance Evaluation.
Further and refresher training
Are you a provider of continuing education and training and want to have your offerings accredited for the PGH? You can do so via the KNMG's GAIA site.
For more information, see the Note on in-service training & re-registration PGH. For questions, mail to accreditatie@nsgh.nl.
GAIA file
Every AIG can activate a personal file via GAIA (Common Accreditation Internet Application) in which all accredited Dutch training courses automatically end up, and applications for accreditation of other activities can be submitted
Go to your personal GAIA file at the KNMG.
