Urgent appeal from healthcare professionals: ‘Call for the immediate evacuation of displaced persons from the Moria camp on Lesbos’.
On 20 September, a second urgent letter was sent to Minister De Jonge and State Secretary Broekers-Knol calling on the government to ‘Evacuate displaced persons from the Moria camp on Lesbos immediately’. The WHIG is one of the organisations supporting this campaign by the NSGH.
The first open letter was a call from paediatricians and youth health doctors to improve the safety and health of children in Greek refugee camps. This open letter is more broadly worded and constitutes a call from healthcare professionals to put an end to human rights violations in the refugee camps.

Lecture by Jamilah Sherally – How to prevent a medical disaster?
Europe must act now if it is to prevent a potential medical disaster in the overcrowded Greek refugee camps, argues Dr Jamilah Sherally, a specialist in global health and tropical medicine.
The Moria refugee camp on the Greek island of Lesbos is notoriously overcrowded. It is not a question of ‘if’ but ‘when’ the coronavirus will strike. In order to draw attention to a possible outbreak of COVID-19 in the camp and the resulting humanitarian crisis, Sherally has joined the SOSMoria campaign, an emergency appeal signed by more than 40,000 doctors and members of the public. Calling on the EU to bring the refugees in Moria to safety to prevent a medical disaster on European soil.
