As we are frequently asked about other options, we are including the following section on working abroad for information purposes.
We would like to emphasise that WHIG has no personal experience of the organisations mentioned.

Working across the border
Have you graduated and are you registered with the BIG? If so, you can, in principle, work as a doctor almost anywhere in Europe. This is because agreements have been made within the EU regarding the mutual recognition of doctors’ qualifications. Qualifications that meet the criteria are recognised without any further assessment of their content, as you can read on www.bigregister.nl.
A Member State may, however, impose conditions for registration (such as paying a registration fee). Outside the EU, it is more difficult, as your qualification is not automatically recognised there. In some countries, for example, you first have to sit an exam before you can apply for a job. And even then, it’s not a given that you’ll be able to practise as a doctor independently. In the US, for instance, you first have to work under supervision for a further four years before you can call yourself an American doctor. So it’s a long road ahead!
It is best to enquire about the rules and conditions with the organisation responsible for maintaining the register in a particular country. You can find the contact details for that organisation via that country’s embassy or consulate.
To work abroad (within or outside the EU), you will need a certificate of registration. RIBIZ can issue a certificate for you in German, English, French or Dutch. This certificate states that you are registered in the Netherlands and are authorised to practise as a doctor under Dutch law. It also specifies whether there are any restrictions on the practice of your profession.

Various organisations in the Netherlands offer overseas job vacancies for GPs and family doctors:
– MMedical is a young consultancy specialising in helping doctors secure posts abroad.
