We believe that education plays a crucial role in preparing current and future health professionals to understand complexity, tackle health inequalities and contribute to sustainable and equitable health systems.

GHEN provides a platform for collaboration, exchange and innovation in education and learning. By connecting educators across institutions and disciplines, we aim to strengthen global health education in the Netherlands and contribute to a shared community of practice.

GHEN operates as a working group within the Netherlands’ Society for Global Health (NSGH) and contributes primarily to the ‘Education’ and ‘Platform & Networks’ pillars of the joint NSGH, OIG and KCGH Strategy 2026–2030. Through knowledge exchange, collaboration and innovative forms of education, GHEN supports the development of forward-thinking health professionals and contributes to a broader community of health education worldwide.

Our vision, mission and values

We envisage an education that enables students to understand and tackle health inequalities, and to contribute to healthier, fairer and more sustainable societies. Global health challenges are influenced by interconnected social, political, economic, environmental and historical processes. Education should equip students to deal with this complexity and act responsibly in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our mission is to promote high-quality education on global health through collaboration, knowledge exchange and educational innovation. We support lecturers in developing and delivering learning experiences that help students understand the determinants of health, critically engage with current global challenges and contribute to equitable health outcomes, both locally and globally.

We recognise that global health is shaped by historical and contemporary processes, including power relations and structural inequalities. We therefore promote educational approaches that encourage critical thinking, mutual learning and meaningful engagement with diverse perspectives and knowledge systems. We also recognise that higher education institutions are themselves embedded within these broader systems. As lecturers and academic institutions, we therefore encourage ongoing reflection on how knowledge is produced, taught and valued, and how educational practices can contribute to more equitable forms of global engagement, collaboration and knowledge exchange. We operate on the basis of the following set of shared values:

Equality – We are committed to reducing health inequalities and promoting opportunities for health and wellbeing for everyone.

Collaboration – We believe that complex health challenges require collective learning and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Critical reflection – We encourage pupils and teachers to critically examine the assumptions, power structures and historical contexts that influence health and healthcare.

Inclusivity – We value diverse perspectives, experiences and forms of knowledge.

Sustainability – We recognise the interdependence of human health, the health of the planet and future generations.

Reflexivity – We encourage constant reflection on the assumptions, values, power structures and institutional contexts that shape global health education and practice.

The GHEN approach and members

GHEN meetings currently take place every three months on Mondays from 16:00 to 18:00. Three out of the four meetings are held online, whilst one meeting is organised by one of the member organisations. During these meetings, members share relevant updates from their own organisations and discuss external developments that may affect global health education and our joint work. Some meetings are themed sessions, providing an opportunity to explore a specific topic in greater depth. Recent themes have included Fair Partnerships.

GHEN is currently chaired by Janine de Zeeuw (UMC Groningen) and Judith van de Kamp (UMC Utrecht). GHEN currently represents the following Dutch organisations: Amsterdam UMC, Erasmus MC, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, Ede University of Applied Sciences, Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC), Maastricht UMC+, Radboudumc, Delft University of Technology, UMC Groningen, UMC Utrecht and VU Amsterdam.

You can become a member of GHEN!

GHEN welcomes representatives from higher education institutions who share our mission and values and are committed to strengthening health education worldwide through collaboration, knowledge exchange and innovation.

The Dutch Global Health Education Network (GHEN) is a platform for collaboration of universities and knowledge institutions involved in education related to Global Health in the Netherlands.

["post-1313","working-group","type-working-group","status-publish","hentry
["GET
